Our second graders continue to amaze us with their hard work and motivation to learn. This month has been filled with engaging hands-on activities inside the classroom. As we continue our study of mapping skills, we’ll take a closer look at the country Australia, as that is our primary focus for our multicultural literacy night. Our reading focus this month has been centered around Folk Tales, Fables and Myths. Folk tales are an important component to literacy because so many of these stories are handed down throughout the years, cross cultural boundaries by reading many different versions of the stories, and last (but certainly not least) enable children to develop a sense of imagination. Just like myths and fables, folk tales tales allow students to learn important life lessons and make personal connections to those lessons. Multi-step math problems are all the rage in second grade. Getting our students to think deeper and explain their reasoning in regard to word problems is our objective.
