Wow! We are already into the third quarter of the school year. In just a few weeks from now our fourth and fifth grade students will be taking the Writing portion of the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA). As a show of support all grade levels will be constructing banners and that will be designed to encourage our fourth and fifth graders to do their best on the assessment. We will also have the Golden Pencil Awards on February 27, 2017. This is our version of the "Writing Oscars" where students will be recognized for their writing skills.
The 100th day of school is Wednesday, February 8th, 2017. Kindergarten students will be asked to dress as if they are either 100 years old or 100 years in the future. This is always a fun event for students and we encourage all kindergarteners to participate. Many other activities will take place throughout the school and we look forward to our students having lots of fun that day.
PTA will be selling "Smencils", which are pencils that have a distinct scent, for $1.00 each. The Smencils are designed to be a Valentines Day surprise for students friends. The "Smencil" will be delivered by PTA to the recipient in the classrooms for Valentine's Day.

Our February School Advisory Council and PTA meeting will be held on February 15th starting at 5:30 pm. To celebrate Black History Month our second graders will be singing and performing in living history museum presentations. These are always wonderful to see as students make the person they portray come to life. These presentations will take place after the meetings on February 15th and during the day on February 23rd. We invite you to join us for these marvelous presentations.
This is an important time of year for our students. I can not emphasize enough how important it is to read nightly at least 20 minutes each night. Preparation and practice are the key to mastering any skill. A musician practices their instrument. An athlete practices their sport. In the same way our students must also practice their academic skills if they are going to be successful. The amount of practice a student does plays a large part in the amount of success a student has.
We look forward to congratulating all those students who will be recognized at the 2nd quarter Honor Roll Assemblies on Tuesday, February 14, 2017. If your child is receiving an award, an invitation will be sent home with the information.
Thank you for making Discovery Elementary School "A Great Place To Be!"
